Where The Wild Things Are

Here in the wilderness we have wild things too.
Saturday evening 6 otters swam by the window- beautiful!
There was a lot of logging done in our area over the last several years, to get the bug killed pine trees.
Of course this disrupted the wildlife around here. However now that the logging has stopped we are seeing more and more of the wild things coming back. This is so wonderful, as I love the animals and birds.
Lots of bear, wolves, coyotes, lynx, cougar, deer, moose, grouse, martins, beavers and now the otters.
All goes back to it's natural state if we just leave well enough alone!

A Simple Life

Snowing here and the weekend was really cold!
It was our Thanksgiving weekend, so I cooked and baked. We had a wonderful friend over to share the meal with us.
One thing about living so far in the wilderness is that it's hard for friends and family to come to visit.
We really enjoy living this way though. So peaceful here. I was born for this kind of life. Surrounded by trees, water, wildlife just makes me feel alive and at one with the universe.
It won't be long before winter really settles in. Then the magic happens when all the trees transforn into beautiful sculpters of white beauty, the ground is covered in a blanket of white with sparkling diamonds, the sky so blue and when the sun goes down the heavens are twinkling with stars so close you could almost touch them. The air is clean and invigorating and you can read the snow as the wildlife moves through.
Soup will be simmering on the woodstove, the smell of bread will be filling the cabin with a tempting aroma as we come in from the cold with our rosey cheeks.
All feels right with the world.

A little about horses

I love the smell of horses, especially after they have been eating sweet fresh grass and plants. Did you know that mint is good for horses digestion? We are lucky here as we have mint and sugar cane grass growing in the meadows.
Also if you rub a blanket or bandana in horse sweat they will keep fleas off of your pets.
Generally horses are awesome companions. If you're having a bad day or feeling down just go and lay your head against a horse. You will feel so much better as the horse shares with you some loving quiet time.

Autumn

Good Morning ,
The autumn colors are fantastic, the air is crisp and cool, the woodstove is keeping us warm inside our cabin, the horses are near by and safe, the cats and dogs are soaking up the warmth of the fire and I think it's time to make a good and hearty soup for supper tonight.
love and blessings to all,

It's Been A Busy Summer

Happy October,
Wow! I can hardly believe how busy the summer has been. Had lots of visits from family, along with haying, building, painting, cutting lumber and trying to finish projects.
The wild blueberries didn't do well in our summer heat wave, so I didn't get any picked! I feel bad for the bears who depend on the berry crops to fatten them up for
winter.
We have had a few bear encounters- momma and her 3 cubs were passing through when 1 cub got way behind the others which caused a bit of concern for us as we were so close to the cub. Momma did a run at us, however it was just a bluff thank goodness!
The other night when we got back from haying, in the dark, we were surprised by a bear chasing our minature horse with our quarter horse chasing and trying to hit and bite the bear to save his little friend! It was quite the scene! The horses are not hurt and the bear has taken off to who knows where.
Then our friend got between a momma bear and her cub! He just about got attacked but managed to put his 4 wheeler in reverse before she got to him.
There's been a coyote hanging around the cabin, too!
All in all it has been a very interesting summer and am looking forward to some down time to create some paintings and do some woodworking.
Hope all of you had a great summer.
Blessings to all,

Bears

On Sunday Ed and I walked into a momma bear and her cub! Momma started to move toward us, so we got out of there fairly quickly! The cub was this years and so tiny and sweet looking. Such is life out here in the wilderness. Encounters with wildlife
are fairly commonplace.
Today I planted some of my garden in buckets, as Ed doesn't have time to help me make a new garden area where it doesn't flood.
Tomorrow I think I will put in some potatoes in the log structure we were building for storing the hay that doesn't fit in the hay shed. I will just put the potatoes on th ground and then cover them up with about 12 inches of old hay. I haven't tried this method before, but it's suppose to work.
The wild mint is growing and smells so nice. I will pick some soon to add to our salads and ice tea. The wild strawberries are in flower and if all goes well for them this may be a great year. Hopefully the wild blueberries and saskatoons are going to be abundant again this year.
It's finally hot here and it sure is enjoyable. The mosquitos are thick, however now the birdies have something to eat now.
The trees are all leafed out, the geese and ducks have hatched out their babies, and all in all life is good.

Spring

Hello to all my beautiful friends and family.
It looks like we are having our Spring now-warm and sunny and the leaves are finally coming out up here.
We really are far behind this year- sure hope that Summer is hot and the hay grows well.
I really love haying. We do it with horses and an old 1948 Cub Tractor. I help a friend with his haying too. We do 3 large meadows. I cut and rake our meadow with the old tractor and the other meadows are done with horses. The work horses are my friends and he's been haying like that for a very long time. He use to log with horses too.

Frugal Living

There hasn't been many times in my life when I haven't had to struggle to make ends meet. When my children were small, we always had gardens, fruit trees, goats, milk cow, chickens, turkeys etc. This helped immensely and it seemed that feeding all those animals didn't cost alot. I always canned fruit and vegeys, made my own bread, crackers, desserts and just made do. Bought food in bulk, ground my own flour, made cheese and yogurt.
Now it's hard to grow a lot because of where we live.
We still make do though. I make a lot of stews and soups, because it stretches the groceries farther.
It's definely a challenge now for everyone I suppose.
We just have to tightened up our belts and keep on keeping on.
Make do or do without.

Pictures

These pictures are from last weekend.
It's really nice living right beside a creek.

Long Weekend

Can you believe it! It's the Canadian May long weekend.
It's suppose to be when we can plant our gardens without the risk of frost.
Well, it is still snowing and freezing up here in the Chilcotin.
I'm thinking that putting a garden in right now is a big mistake. The weather has been very chilly and it doesn't appear that it will change soon. I will have to get into wild food foraging more. We do have lots of wild strawberries and blueberries later on in the season along with wild herbs and vegeys to pick. Up in this country it is a real challenge to grow vegeys. Last year my garden flooded 3 times! A greenhouse is nice to have, too.
Ed is so busy now that i'm not sure if the greenhouse will be functional this year.
We've also discussed the issue of growing and raising our own food up here and are wondering if it really pays off in the long run, with all the work and money we have to spend doing it.
There are places down the mountain that grow organic food, plus there is the farmer's market all summer. Maybe it's better to support the farmers that can grow food in a warmer locale.
I do have lettuce and herbs growing on the window sill, which is nice.
We have one of our boys living here with us now. It's really nice to have some family around. We all get along quite nicely and now I have someone else to look after, which I love.
Love and Peace,

Memories

Lately I have been going back in time to when I was a little girl. My mom and 2 sisters lived with my grandmother for awhile.
I remember hearing the sound of a bell and the clip clop of horses hooves as the Junk man came down the lane calling "Junk, Junk" from his wagon. People use to give the things that they didn't want to him and he would take all away. The horses were awesome with their huge hairy hooves and their beautiful long manes. They were Clydesdales and so big to me. I loved when they would come around and I could pet them.
Back in those days we got our milk, cream and butter from the milk man. We would leave our glass pint and quart jars out on the porch at night and in the morning the milk man would see what jars were on the porch and replace what we had run out of.
Also we had a egg man, who delivered eggs.
My grandmother always grew her own vegetables and even had a compost pile out back. She baked all her own bread, buns and of course pies, cakes, cookies, jams, jellies, pickles, etc.
She grew beautiful flowers, plus we had crab apple trees, herbs, rhubarb, raspberries, strawberries and a peach tree too.
We always hung our clothes out to dry in the fresh air, even in the winter.
When we went out for groceries we walked everywhere. We would go to the butcher for fresh meat, then to the store for items that we needed.
Granny would go shopping for fresh stuff a few times a week.
I loved that part of my childhood.

Still Waiting

I'd like to say that I have been outside putting in the garden; however, I'm still waiting for the weather to warm up. This is really unseasonal weather we are having.
Still getting artic outflows here.
Went to Kamloops on Saturday and even down there everything is behind at least 3 weeks.
The horses are probably wondering where the green grass is. Usually by this time of year they are in the pasture eating lovely fresh greens.
Somehow I hurt my knee and am now limping around. May go to see the saw-bones if it doesn't get better soon.
We haven't started any major building projects yet. We are hoping we can cut some log siding for our cabin this year. I love log homes and putting up the siding will transform the look of our home.
Namaste,

One thing about living here is the fantastic sunrises and sunsets we get. We haven't any pollution to cover up the sky. Just clean, fresh air to breathe each and every day. Also beautiful landscapes that change daily with the seasons.
I hope you enjoy these pictures.

Is It Really Spring?

This has been a long cold winter and spring so far.
The creek finally opened up. We have geese and a variety of water fowl swimming around now.
I love living right by the creek, especially in the warm months. It gets so lively with all the birds and activity that goes on among the wild ones.
We have red wing blackbirds, yellow headed blackbirds, juncoes, black capped chickadees, robins, barn swallows, tree swallows, blue birds, purple martins, meadow larks, finches, greyjays, bluejays, sparrows, wrens, ravens, sand-hill cranes, lesser yellow legs, godwits, hairy woodpeckers, pileated woodpeckers, yellow bellied sapsuckers, hummingbirds, a variety of hawks, bald eagles, cow birds, canada geese, white pelicans, blue heron, loons, mallards, buffleheads, pintails, northern shovelers, grouse, owls and I'm sure I am missing some others that stop here.
There are also beaver, otters, muskrats, pine martins, squirrels, chipmunks, rainbow trout, minnows, bears, cougars, lynx, coyotes, wolves, moose, mule and white tail deer.
This little piece of heaven is a haven for so many birds and animals.
It's truly wonderful to be able to live among the wild ones.

Adding on to the Cabin

A few years ago we decided that we would add an addition to the cabin. We wanted an indoor workshop, a basement to put our battery packs to keep them cool plus have some storage room for vegetables/fruit. We also wanted to have a bigger bedroom and a place for an indoor toilet.
Off we went to get our bug killed trees, take them to our sawmill and cut the lumber we needed.
We wanted to cut all the lumber that was needed first, then pre build the walls with the windows framed in and the trusses for the roof.
That way when it came to putting up the addition we could just boogy along without having to stop to cut lumber or frame the walls in.
This way of building was a lot faster for us.
To put up the upstairs walls and trusses we had to make a gin pole to pull the walls and trusses up to where they were needed.
This worked great too. A gin pole is actually 3 long poles chained together in a tripod shape with a pulley attached to the top and a rope through the pulley. We used our pickup truck to pull the rope that lifted up the walls and trusses to where they were needed.

Now we're talking about adding a covered deck out back. We want to have a summer kitchen. We will put my old woodstove there, so I can cook and bake, without making our cabin too warm.
We just might hang up our hammocks out there too and dream some dreams.

Power

Good Morning,
Living on a year round creek is great. We can experiment with different ways of producing power with water.
Last year we built an undershot water wheel with wood and put it in the creek where an old beaver dam is.
The water wheel produced a bit of power, but not what we could use for anything.
It could be that the wooden paddles are too heavy, as it doesn't turn fast enough.
This summer we may try using metal paddles. The paddles would be a lot lighter and perhaps then we could generate enough power to run something.

Still Winter

The clocks have gone ahead and it is still winter here. Minus 14 and it looks like it will get even colder during the first part of the coming week.

Homesteading isn't always the easy way in life. There's the constant building and fixing things up. There's the bringing in of firewood and keeping the home fires burning. Chores to do everyday, twice a day, even when it's extremely cold or you're sick, they have to get done.

Winter will end and planting will begin before we know it.

Happy Trails ,

Still Cold

Good Morning,

It's still very cold here. At night the temperatures drop down to minus 28-30 celsius.

During the middle of the day it's not too bad, getting up to around minus 1.

It will be great when the weather breaks.

We have a Hairy Woodpecker hanging around the homestead and drilling a lot of holes in all our buildings. He's probably getting the flies and bugs that winter over in between the outside and inside walls. He's really handsome and is not frightened of us, which is great.

The seeds I planted last week have sprouted and soon I will have to transplant them into bigger containers. It's nice to see the little green shoots and dream of harvesting the fruits and vegeys in the summer.

Have a lovely day,

Wildernesswoman

This is True

Chief Seattle said "This we know. The earth does not belong to man; man belongs to the earth.
This we know...Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it.
Whatever he does to the web he does to himself."
I say this is true. Look around you and you will see.
We've got to get back into the natural rhythm of nature.
Reach out and embrace Mother Earth- she needs us now more than ever to strive to live in harmony with the natural world.

Planting

It's almost the middle of February and that means that Spring will be upon us soon.
I started some seeds indoors to get ready for planting time.
I planted 3 kinds of tomatoes, some assorted mini peppers, a few herbs and lettuce, so we can eat salad greens soon. I also planted cat grass, so our furry little friends may have some early greens to munch on, too.
Today is the full moon with snow falling. It looks like we will be getting some cooler weather for the next week or so.
It's times like these that I am grateful for our wood heater and the warmth that it give to us.
Stay warm and be kind to each other,

Where Did All the Homesteaders Go?

Good morning,

February, already. That means there are only 6 weeks to go until spring.

That is good news for all of us that want to get outdoors and plant our gardens and of course,

get some natural vitamin D.

Where we live right now there are only 6 families homesteading in thousands of acres of land.

Way back when there were between 60 - 70 homesteading families and individuals living in this area.

Where did everyone go?

I suppose some people left for town to school their children and perhaps the other folks just up and left for greener pastures or sold out to some of the big ranches and sought an easier lifestyle.

I've never seen so many old abandoned homesteads.

For the 6 families that do live here full time, none of us are complaining about all the room we have to roam about on.

Happy Trails to all,
