Spring

Hello to all my beautiful friends and family.
It looks like we are having our Spring now-warm and sunny and the leaves are finally coming out up here.
We really are far behind this year- sure hope that Summer is hot and the hay grows well.
I really love haying. We do it with horses and an old 1948 Cub Tractor. I help a friend with his haying too. We do 3 large meadows. I cut and rake our meadow with the old tractor and the other meadows are done with horses. The work horses are my friends and he's been haying like that for a very long time. He use to log with horses too.

Frugal Living

There hasn't been many times in my life when I haven't had to struggle to make ends meet. When my children were small, we always had gardens, fruit trees, goats, milk cow, chickens, turkeys etc. This helped immensely and it seemed that feeding all those animals didn't cost alot. I always canned fruit and vegeys, made my own bread, crackers, desserts and just made do. Bought food in bulk, ground my own flour, made cheese and yogurt.
Now it's hard to grow a lot because of where we live.
We still make do though. I make a lot of stews and soups, because it stretches the groceries farther.
It's definely a challenge now for everyone I suppose.
We just have to tightened up our belts and keep on keeping on.
Make do or do without.

Pictures

These pictures are from last weekend.
It's really nice living right beside a creek.

Long Weekend

Can you believe it! It's the Canadian May long weekend.
It's suppose to be when we can plant our gardens without the risk of frost.
Well, it is still snowing and freezing up here in the Chilcotin.
I'm thinking that putting a garden in right now is a big mistake. The weather has been very chilly and it doesn't appear that it will change soon. I will have to get into wild food foraging more. We do have lots of wild strawberries and blueberries later on in the season along with wild herbs and vegeys to pick. Up in this country it is a real challenge to grow vegeys. Last year my garden flooded 3 times! A greenhouse is nice to have, too.
Ed is so busy now that i'm not sure if the greenhouse will be functional this year.
We've also discussed the issue of growing and raising our own food up here and are wondering if it really pays off in the long run, with all the work and money we have to spend doing it.
There are places down the mountain that grow organic food, plus there is the farmer's market all summer. Maybe it's better to support the farmers that can grow food in a warmer locale.
I do have lettuce and herbs growing on the window sill, which is nice.
We have one of our boys living here with us now. It's really nice to have some family around. We all get along quite nicely and now I have someone else to look after, which I love.
Love and Peace,

Memories

Lately I have been going back in time to when I was a little girl. My mom and 2 sisters lived with my grandmother for awhile.
I remember hearing the sound of a bell and the clip clop of horses hooves as the Junk man came down the lane calling "Junk, Junk" from his wagon. People use to give the things that they didn't want to him and he would take all away. The horses were awesome with their huge hairy hooves and their beautiful long manes. They were Clydesdales and so big to me. I loved when they would come around and I could pet them.
Back in those days we got our milk, cream and butter from the milk man. We would leave our glass pint and quart jars out on the porch at night and in the morning the milk man would see what jars were on the porch and replace what we had run out of.
Also we had a egg man, who delivered eggs.
My grandmother always grew her own vegetables and even had a compost pile out back. She baked all her own bread, buns and of course pies, cakes, cookies, jams, jellies, pickles, etc.
She grew beautiful flowers, plus we had crab apple trees, herbs, rhubarb, raspberries, strawberries and a peach tree too.
We always hung our clothes out to dry in the fresh air, even in the winter.
When we went out for groceries we walked everywhere. We would go to the butcher for fresh meat, then to the store for items that we needed.
Granny would go shopping for fresh stuff a few times a week.
I loved that part of my childhood.
