Long Weekend

Can you believe it! It's the Canadian May long weekend.
It's suppose to be when we can plant our gardens without the risk of frost.
Well, it is still snowing and freezing up here in the Chilcotin.
I'm thinking that putting a garden in right now is a big mistake. The weather has been very chilly and it doesn't appear that it will change soon. I will have to get into wild food foraging more. We do have lots of wild strawberries and blueberries later on in the season along with wild herbs and vegeys to pick. Up in this country it is a real challenge to grow vegeys. Last year my garden flooded 3 times! A greenhouse is nice to have, too.
Ed is so busy now that i'm not sure if the greenhouse will be functional this year.
We've also discussed the issue of growing and raising our own food up here and are wondering if it really pays off in the long run, with all the work and money we have to spend doing it.
There are places down the mountain that grow organic food, plus there is the farmer's market all summer. Maybe it's better to support the farmers that can grow food in a warmer locale.
I do have lettuce and herbs growing on the window sill, which is nice.
We have one of our boys living here with us now. It's really nice to have some family around. We all get along quite nicely and now I have someone else to look after, which I love.
Love and Peace,

  1. we are getting the cool temps here too, and we have already lost a few plants to the cold at night, we just got our order of rose bushes and shrubs today too.. it looks like they have to wait a bit longer before we risk puting the flowers and vegies out..again.
It would cost you roughly 200 a year to raise a cow and im sure less for pork and chickens as thay are both scroungers
and faster maturing. As long as you have some place to keep the meat frozen id say give it a try..if neither of you are queasy about slaughtering it come time :)

  2. We just got snow the other night and it is still freezing...some of the plants that we bought for the garden...which were waiting patiently to be planted, got a little frost last night...i hope they will be ok...Garry brought them in this morning and now they have to stay inside until it is finally safe to plant them. We are often talking about growing our own food, but just this morning we were talking about how short the planting and growing season is here. A greenhouse would be wonderful !!! A big fat one ... heheh. I 'm a little frustrated by the weather right now...i so wish I could be outside digging...hopefully soon !!!! enjoy your long weekend !!! :)

  3. So it seems that the weather everywhere is cool! Well Mother Nature is the boss!
We do make our own hay for the horses and it is free range country up here.
We don't really like to kill animals.
I really like my veges. I use to have such awesome gardens and now it is hard for me to scale back because of the weather.
Oh well, such is life and it's a really good thing that others can grow what we can't.
    Love & Light
